When the blazing sun is gone,
and he, nothing, shines upon,
then you show your little light
and twinkle, twinkle, all the night.
Then the Traveler in the dark
thanks you for your tiny spark.
He could not see which way to go
if you did not twinkle so.
As your bright and tiny spark
lights the Traveler in the dark,
though I know not what you are,
twinkle, twinkle, little star.

Speaker's Reflections: Gunslingers[]

Among the legion-strong ranks of the Guardians, the Speaker supposed as he stood by the railing within his observatory, drinking in the moonlight that fell through the open-air gap in its walls, those known to their fellows as Gunslingers were perhaps the most peculiar to him. They, of all Guardians, were among those with the finest precise control over their manifestation of the Traveler's light. And yet, they chose to put that control all to use in conjuring a pistol.

Such a weapon was complex, every mechanism inside replicated down to trigger and hammer lock, and crafting it would take so much of a Guardian's energy that he knew of none who were able to fire more than three or four shots with it anyway. Were he one of them, the Speaker would have put his strength and focus to better use on a more elegant design, more efficiently translating the force of solar light. Not to mention, many of them already carried a hand cannon of similar design, making the misuse of the Traveler's power all the more of an affront.

Yet, on each occasion he had taken the time to inquire about it, he found himself rebuked. Gunslingers, it seemed, were proud of their craft. It was a tradition of the outlaws to bear such a weapon which they strove to follow, surprising to him when so many Hunters sought so readily to escape out into the wild beyond the reach of the Last City's laws.

That they could follow any sort of uniform code was strange. If Titans were the most regimented order of Guardians, Hunters were undisciplined, but always unique. He'd known of one Gunslinger that focused his energy into creating a breach-action pistol capable of burning a hole through a Vex Minotaur, but could only fire a single shot. He'd had high hopes for that one, but all of it was squandered when the Hunter had decided to leave the order, wandering off into the wilderness at the protest of his Ghost. He wondered what became of that one.

  • The name of this story was a joke between several members of Halo Party Time about the Speaker's line, "I could tell you of the great battle, centuries ago..." and how it's an unparalleled tease about the lack of direct story in the first Destiny.
